Stroller safety is one of the best thing we can do for are little ones. Sometime we have a tendency to over look the little things. If you are buying a stroller or have been given one here are some things to look for.
- Hand Rest If you choose a stroller with a hand rest or grab bar in the front, make sure the opening between the bar and the seat can be closed when it is being used in the reclining carriage position.
- 2. Storage basket This is definitely a nice thing to have in a stroller; you are going to use it constantly. Not only it will help you to carry spare diapers, formula, toys, coats and lots of other things your baby might need, but also when you go shopping, you will have a place to put groceries, all the big and small packages and bags. Remember, the storage basket must be located low and possibly close to the rear wheels.
- 3. Seat Belts Check the seat belt to make sure it is strong and durable, fits snugly around your child, and can be easily fastened and unfastened. Use the seat belt each time you place the baby in the stroller.
- 4. Adjustable seat A stroller that is comfortable for two-months-old child might not be as comfortable for one-year-old, so it’s a good idea to have an adjustable seat. Stroller seats also often have a capability of changing to reclining position. Make sure the stroller does not tip backwards as your baby lies down.
- 5. Braking system It’s a must for a stroller to have good braking system that will allow you to park it even on an inclined surface and to be sure that it’s not going to roll down the street.
- 6. Canopy A canopy will be very helpful to protect your baby from the sun and more importantly in the nasty weather.
- 7. Folding Make sure the stroller can be folded easily and fits the space where you are going to store it. Also check it fits the trunk of your car.
- 8. Wide base When looking at a stroller you have to be sure that it has a base wide enough to prevent tipping. You can expect that your child will try to lean out over the sides of the stroller, so it’s very important that it has to be hard to tip.
In addition to looking for safety on the stroller here is a check list to keep in mind wile using your stroller.
- 1. Close the opening between hand rest or grab bar and seat when using a stroller in the reclined carriage position.
- 2. When folding or unfolding a stroller, keep your child away from it. Children’s fingers have been amputated in parts of the folding mechanism.
- 3. Always secure the seat belt.
- 4. Never leave a child unattended in a stroller, especially when the baby is asleep.
- 5. A stroller is not a toy. Never allow children to use one as a plaything.
- 6. If you walk at night us an attachable light that mounds on the stroller.
